Royal New Zealand Navy Band

About 7 months ago I was very privileged to be commissioned by the Royal New Zealand Navy Band to make 6 drums. 5 ceremonial snares and a bass drum.

Been keeping this one quiet but finally here they are!!!!!

The design of the new drums were a collaborative effort between the Navy and myself. Using 4 NZ native timbers for the construction I’ll think you’ll agree these drums are stunning and pretty special!

Yesterday came the time to very proudly present these drums to the RNZN Band just in time for their trip north for Waitangi Celebrations.

The Drum shells are Rimu, the hoops are made from Matai, the 3 emblems on the drum are Kauri, and finally Pine re-rings inside.

A special couple of thankyous. Firstly to the RNZN Band, in particular Leni who I worked with on the design of these drums. Leni also designed the cultural emblem front and center on all the drums as well as the designs on each hoop that I engraved by hand which represent the 4 core values of the Navy.

Thanks to Pam at Platinum Laser for lasering the emblems so beautifully. Finally a huge thanks to the team at Dovetail restorations for the flawless spray job on the drums and hoops.
